For an ILS, this is accomplished by exporting ILS metadata, converting it from MARC to MARCXML, and loading it into an OAI-PMH compliant repository. The repository (embedded in the OAI Toolkit) makes the data available for harvesting by other XC components. […]”

“The eXtensible Catalog (XC) project is working to design and develop a set of open-source applications that will provide libraries with an alternative way to reveal their collections to library users. XC will provide easy access to all resources (both digital and physical collections) across a variety of databases, metadata schemas and standards, and will enable library content to be revealed through other services that libraries may already be using, such as content management systems and learning management systems.
[…] The NCIP Toolkit will allow XC user-interface clients to interact with an ILS for authentication requests, live circulation status lookups, and circulation requests. XC uses the NCIP standard protocol to accomplish this. Once the NCIP Toolkit has been successfully installed alongside a compatible ILS, that ILS will be able to interoperate both with XC and non-XC NCIP clients.[…]”
